Why would a rebuilding team want one year of Davis?

Because a rebulding team doesn't need Ryan Howards wasting space? Hence them basically giving Byrd away just to rid themselves of Howard. Atleast Davis has a shot to rebound and net them a draft pick if he does. No one is giving them anything of value if they are expected to take Howard too.

Would you trade Davis for Byrd straight up? I wouldn't. And I certainly wouldn't do it for the opportunity to pay Howard $50M.

Because they really really really don't want Ryan Howard, and Davis would give them a MLB-ready stopgap.

I understand why they want to get rid of Howard but why would they want Davis on a 1/11 or so contract? Why wouldn't they want an actual prospect? I think the bust factor is too high on Davis to be able to bank on flipping him or offering him a QO at this point. He repeats his 2014 campaign and they are stuck.

Im not sure anyting could really get me to want Howard at this point in their career. .294, .319, .310 on base the last 3 years and .423, .465, .380 slugging the last 3 years for Howard. Not to mention the 30 mil he gets per year. I predict that he is barely a plus OWAR player over the next 2 years and not to mention, the guy isn't a good defender. DAVID LOUGH out-slugged Howardlast year (.385)

Byrd has proven over the past 2 years that he can still hit and I think he could be good here. Also has the possibility of just hitting a wall due to age. Is it worth trading something of value to get Byrd, not really sure. I would lean on the side that trading for Byrd isnt worth it, but who knows. I'm not big on players 37 years old post steriod era, but that doesnt mean he can't put up good numbers.

No I wouldn't. Im not sure I even want Byrd period. The only guy I really want from the Phillies is Cole Hamels. Maybe Byrd and Utley I may consider.

Im not sure they are rebuilding. I see them trying to pull a Boston Red Sox. Try to dump their really bad deals on another team, eat a bad year, then spend again on a quick fix in 2016. A mark isn't smart enough to rebuild.

I disagree.

No way they can rebuild on the fly and catch the Nats.

I am pretty sure ownership has finally accepted this fact.

    • Mayo coming back from injury could have his debut in Baltimore delayed.
    • Wasn't a huge fan of his swing for that last out today but coming in to pinch hit with 2 outs isn't easy.
    • Interpreting Malike's comment that way is theoretically possible, but I didn't take it that way--didn't feel that shade was being thrown on me at all. But thanks for the concern.
    • People are being a bit ridiculous with the holier than thou takes criticizing a little humor. I am not saying what happened couldn’t cause a significant concussion, but it would be a bit of a fluke if it did. Mullins barely hit him with the bat and he had a helmet on. The fact that it was in the back of the head did make him more vulnerable, but this wasn’t the type of thing you see and think he was lucky to be alive.  Guys have probably hit their heads harder on the top of the dugout or on the fence making catches.  And note this comes from someone whose son has suffered severe concussions and who is well aware of the dangers associated with them. In short, people need to lighten up a bit on guys like Roy.  It was a little gallows humor.
    • Yeah, you read that wrong. LA2 is one of my favorite posters here and he knows it. No harm, no foul. If you aren't familiar with the game threads, it doesn't matter what the team is doing, people complain about it and people did make that same joke in the game thread long before Roy said it here. Game thread in summary - when the O's are not doing well, it's insufferable, when they are doing well, it's mildly less insufferable. There, that wasn't hard. I'd appreciate it if you didn't assume I'm throwing shade at people. I'll leave that up to you to do, you're really good at it.
    • Comp a. Like Gunnar, and beavers…
    • Wasn't Westburg a 2nd round draft pick?  It's a little early to judge last year's draft.
